Anyone into document management?

I'm doing alot of research into this topic as I want to organise my docs at home and also at the office. Finding affordable solutions one can actually test drive is quite hard. Some that I've downloaded just don't seem to work (testing on brand new Vista PC). I've seen some software on Amazon but not really sure what they're like.

For home I'd like something to organise files, full text search, good scanner integration, nice interface etc.

But for the office it seems harder. I need something that does proper workflow and keeps versions. So I have the latest version of a document for a given year for example and I can roll back to another version. It will have an audit trail. Documents can be approved, checked in/out etc.

Seems like something that more people should be using but apparently aren't. My Google/twitter searches lead back to the same tired and vague webpages. I have only two leads that look interesting so if you can augment my knowledge with something useful that would be cool.

Hear ye Hear ye. All sifter who have been wondering what has happened to the owner of the Geek Channel, ok so maybe you didn't even care, but I've come back from the dead to transfer ownership over to demon_ix, who will be the new proprietor. That is if Dag and Lucky are willing to change that. Just keep your fingers crossed that when they do they don't erase all the votes from every video on the sift.

I just haven't been nearly as active on the sift as I was about a year ago so I feel it's time to pass the torch. Just remember, wherever stupid video create unstoppable memes on the interweb. I will be there, lurking... and occasionally posting things.... and such.... I'm batman!

I cant post the whole request because it is presumed to be malicious, and someone might follow the link. I am trying to find a way to navigate to the malicious link with out running the risk of damaging my browser or my box.

Looking into it now, and I'm not sure what is suspicious about it. This is the first time Ive been notified of this, and thus posting it here so other people can verify if its a false positive or not.

The request is originating From chrome://browser/content/browser.xul

I can see other adds fine, but every time I try out the URL No script blocks that add request, and sanitizes the URL.

This is real-time text editing with 2 or more people. It has a chat box on the right so you can discuss what you're doing. It is absolutely superb and the timeline feature lets you play back the creation of the text as it happened. Of course it also stores all your versions.

The reason I'm raving is that I had to help my sister complete a job application while I was at the office. We dumped the job spec into a pad and started editing. In a few hours we achieved what I'm absolutely certain would have taken at least double that (extra time for viewing changes and approving them via email or wiki-style product).

I use various apps for work but this is the one that promises to spice up productivity. I love the way this is focused on tasks, getting them in quickly and allows you to type invocations that remind me of life on Videosift. Your tasks naturally fall into a timeline and you can filter and edit quickly. You can start timetracking on any item, discuss and group tasks into very easily accessed projects.

It has a colourful look and feels nimble and refreshing. I'm using a mixture of Basecamp and Highrise for my needs but Basecamp seems like overkill as it doesn't see much use. This would be worth the 4 euros a month but there is a free account. I'd love to see them extend the concept to includes notes and files but these things evolve over time.

I wanted to recommend to sifters online backup services, like Mozy and Carbonite. They backup your files as soon as you make changes.

Mozy offers 2 gig of backup free. If you want unlimited storage space, Carbonite costs $55/year and Mozy costs a little more, but Mozy lets you pay on a monthly basis.

There's probably software for external harddrives that does the same thing, which probably protects your data from most risks, but there are still the risks of theft, freak electric events, natural disasters, and extraterrestrial invasions.

My main computer is a little damaged right now (http://geek.videosift.com/talk/Uninterruptible-power-supply-Advice), so I'm glad I recently started a backup subscription.

My computer recently sustained damage because I wasn't using an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and we had a momentary power outage.

Does anybody have experience with calculating the wattage needed for a UPS? I just need the UPS for my monitor and computer.
---My monitor is listed as having power consumption of <105W.

---My computer's power supply unit (PSU) is a 450W.

---Does that mean I need a UPS of >555W? (105W + 450W) (I'm considering this one.)

BTW, the damage my computer sustained from the power outage is that it won't turn on anymore. I'm hoping replacing the PSU will fix it, but I don't really know much about this.
