Channel Categories

In the discussion we had in dotdude's recent Sift Talk post about raising the maximum channel assignemnts, a consensus seemed to emerge that we should categorize the channels in some way so that assigning channels to videos will be easier, especially for newbies. In light of this I thought I'd try my hand at categorization of all our channels. I didn't include little check boxes next to each channel, but I think you can imagine them. At least I hope so.

Keep in mind that I did this quickly, so it's by no means perfect. Also you'll probably notice that some channels are listed in more than one category. My thought is that it wouldn't make sense to leave those out of some categories, so it won't hurt to list them more than once. If a person checked one channel more than once, then the first check mark for that category would disappear. For example, if someone first checked Obscure under the Film category and then again under the Music category, the check mark under the Film category would disappear.

I welcome your constructive feedback, and welcome even more your own images of what you think it should look like. A picture is worth a thousand words, correct? Let's help dag and lucky with this, because they're already doing a lot of heavy lifting for peanuts. One less headache is universally appreciated.

I politely disagree with this idea. I'm not sure I get the idea, off hand, but if I think I get it then I don't think I like what I get. Let me ask, if I like this does it mean I like to buggar little choir boys?

Without specific feedback I really can't address your concerns, fellas. However, I'll venture a guess: You don't like the Human Behavior category. That's fine; but let me explain why I put that category together like I did:

Drug usage is a part of human behavior for some people. And when we watch videos about kids, teens, women, and gay people, those are also specific aspects of human behavior.

Do you have a better way of categorizing our channels? I'm open to suggestions. Seriously. I said from the get-go that it's not perfect, so I'd love to see alternatives.

Looks good to me - Pretty much what I saw in my head as well... Only the colours were different

Also, you'de have to plan it out so as to make room for new channels as they are added.

@Sagemind: The color of the boxes are unimportant to me. Yellow was just randomly chosen by me. They don't need to be any color at all, really. A simple box around each category will work. Also the boxes could be smaller if I put the title above the list instead of off to the side. Like I said, I did this in a hurry, so it could certainly look better.

@MrFisk: There's no controversy here (hence my removal of it from this post), and what you're discussing should be brought up in another thread.

Anyway, from what I'm gathering this has nothing to do with adding to the limit of channels per each video right? This just has to do with how you select the channel on the video submission page?

I personally don't think it's broken as it is. This won't make it any easier...in fact it could make it harder. If I know something belongs in the "brain" channel I can use my alphabet skills and figure out where its at using a complex but accurate algorithm. There's even a song that helps young children learn this sorting algorithm. However if I wanted to find the "brain" channel under your new method, I'd have to try and determine where somebody else, or a consensus of the people decided where "brain" goes. That might not be how my mind works and I'd be confused and a little pissed.
