i bet you they thought they were food. because ants recognize their own by pheromons. so Once they got to the ants they were probably like "Aww dam!" and decided to save them instead  some ants collonies are canabolistic in the sense that they will retrieve their fallen and use them as a food source, but thats not in most cases. all for the queen! written by Lethin
