Guy replaces wing and propellor with an entirely new method of using a horizontal axis fan instead aerofoil wing. A little clumsy looking as a prototype, but given the years since the airplane was invented - quite impressive to invent something new other than propellors.

"One of the few truly new aircraft since the Wright Brothers" Clive Thompson, New York Times

That's amazing. The whole push lawnmower on the top seems like it could be a safety issue though. And we all know what happens when birds meet jet engines, imagine if a bird flew into that.

^you're right, they should probably sharpen the edges and make sure it's sturdy

Wonder how well it glides/falls-out-of-the-sky if the mechanism jams... seem like small wings.

You could put that rotor on a condom and have a Fan WANG.

This could be an Anti-UAV-UAV.... it just flys into the other plane and shreds them to bits.

For added safety you could make each section of the rotors independent of the rest, and give each of them their own motors. If you could find a way to link them on a differential shaft you would have a very safe redundant motor system.
