Samsung Galaxy 10.1 vs iPad 2

My girlfriend wants a tablet for Jesus' birthday. Actually, she wants an iPad 2. I have some qualms with Apple, but I'm ok with buying it for her if it's a better product...it is what she wants. However, I'm a man so, to me, "shiny" isn't a spec I give 2 shits about. Also, iOS seems stiflingly rigid and controlled (for better or for worse). And as far as smartphones go, I have the EVO and she has an iPhone, so our preferences are crystal clear.

For those who have operated one or both of these products, I have a couple of questions. Is there a benefit from owning both the iphone and an ipad other than just the familiarity of the OS? Do they keep each other company so one of them doesn't tear up the furniture when we're at work or something like that? Does the new iOS 5 allow "multitasking" yet or is multitasking still too much for the brain of an Apple consumer? How does the performance for the Galaxy 10.1 fair? The hardware specs look sexy, but does it all work together? What are some "non-measurables" I should know about?

As you can tell, I'm not a fan of Apple, but I really am looking to make her happy (for once).

PS: We need a "tech" channel

I'm no expert.. there's the cloud system that's in place now, where you can sign up to wireless syncing between devices; anything you do on your iphone will be reflecetd on your ipod for certain linked things like schedules and vice versa (i think).

Maybe another thing to factor in is you basically CANNOT beat siri right now. Not only is it outstripping all competition but its potential is of skynet proportions by all accounts, and extremely difficult to replicate.

Tablets are different to phones though, and i've never experienced an ipad or any other tablet. I suppose it'd mostly depend on what she does on it? If it's work, and she uses windows for work, might be better going with something that has more open support than an ipad, or if she wants to use it for reading, web and general utility then i'd say the ipad holds most of the cards.

I can say from the perspective of someone who really likes the iphone that when someone really likes the iOS style and feel, nothing less really will suffice. By that i mean if you buy her anything less than one of those tablets on star trek, there might still be a twang of disappointment that it's not an ipad. People can get fussy about apple, as you know

As an iOS and Android developer, I recommend the iPad 2. From a user standpoint is has better apps and, at least to me, the interface "feels" better. In fairness though, I have not worked directly with the Galaxy 10.1, so I don't know too much about the performance of that. The iPad 2 is a beast and can pull off quite a bit of stuff though.

With dropbox on it, it becomes a lot more useful for work stuff, since you can easily move files on and off.

Siri is not available on the iPad 2, yet, at least. And nothing has been announced, so this should be kept in mind when purchasing, if Siri is a wanted feature.

There are apps that can interact from iPhone to iPad, and you can tether the iPad to use the iPhone as a hotspot, which can be nice.

I'm quite surprised siri isn't on the ipad 2... but i'd assumed it had the hardware for it.

Soooo it's apple, there's only gonna be one of two reasons - either it doesn't have the hardware (gwizz will know) or they're releasing a new ipad soonish and want to have a selling point. I'd recommend looking at estimated release rumours for a new ipad, might play into your decision.

bitch can have iPad 2...I'm not playing the "keep updating" game. That's some bullshit...

edit: That was written after I saw rumors that iPad 3 would start production Jan. 2012

I think they're saying March for the iPad 3 with the higher-res screen. The screen is already pretty darn good, so I don't think it's a reason to wait.

Galaxy would be much more tweakable - just depends if she is the type of person that likes to customise a lot, or is just looking for a good experience out of the box. Also, if she has an iPhone - iPad gets an edge because it's basically the same experience and no learning curve at all. Here's what I use my iPad for in descending order of freqency:

Web
movies (side loaded, not iTunes)
books (mainly Kindle)
games

Noted. I think the iPad 2 seems like the better way to go for her.>> ^dag:

The iPad 2 has identical hardware to iPhone 4S, then only differences is that 4S is downclocked to 800 MHz (from 1 GHz) and that it obviously has a different resolution. It could pull off Siri easily I would wager (unless it has some sort of extra gadget inside especially for it, which is doubtful).

It's not about technical limitations. It's product alignment and yes, cynically, selling more iPhone 4s's. But even taking out the cynical bit - Siri does make more sense on the iPhone than an iPad. Much of Siri relies on GPS which is not built in to the iPad WiFI version. Siri also needs you to be online all the time to work- whereas the iPad is not. For these reasons and a few more - Siri on the iPad would not be an optimal experience- and if it's not optimal - Apple doesn't do it.

The real question is why isn't Siri on the 4 or even the 3GS? I'm afraid that's mostly about the Benjamins.

I done been hearing rumors that Siri is coming to the iPhone 4, but this is doubtful as there is a hardware limitation there - a significantly slower processor. Other than that, yea, lots of these things are business decisions rather than technical limitations. Remember when apple blocked the app that made the Volume button into a shortcut to take pictures - and then after a while released a new version of the camera software that had the feature in it. Lots of things like that happen too.

(useless comment) i'm going for the galaxy, my wife has the ipad2 which I don't favor too much. Ipad mannerisms drive me nuts. I have the galaxy phone right now, I talk to it all the time for dialing, finding businesses, writing text msgs etc. I am not sure about the 10" or the next 7.7" OLED model. Samsung has evidently wrapped the android interface in their own thing as well. It is more like a wrapper than an Apple prison though.

Got a crappy HTC Wildire aka Buzz in the U.S I believe and the 10.1 Galaxy. It's a very nice tablet and I get a lot of use out of it. I have a few apps that are on both devices, notably Catch notes which I love.

The disappointment is the crappy marketplace but I was willing to work with that given I'm no Apple fan. But if you want to give her a device that is simple to use and has apps for everything then your decision to go with the ipad 2 makes a lot of sense.

I like how everyone is warming to the new iphone and Siri in particular. I was really amazed when Apple took a beating for pushing out what is clearly a very good phone. You have to wonder what magic they'll be required to perform come the iphone 5.
